It's the kickoff of every summer. The wave bathing season begins this week, from July 3rd to 6th. Period costumes, parades, children's activities, food, and the first fireworks.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Today I will tell you a little about the origin of this activity.<\/p>\n
The year was 1847, and while in Europe some were discovering the railway or the telephone, something even more revolutionary was happening in Santander:\u00a0<\/p>\n
The aristocracy discovered that getting wet in the sea could be chic.\u00a0<\/p>\n
And we're not just talking about splashing around! No! We're talking about bathing on doctor's orders. Yes, yes. The doctor said, "Take three waves before breakfast," and hey, everyone, get your ankles wet!\u00a0<\/p>\n
Ladies in corsets and sun hats rode on wheeled carts that were driven onto the sand and there, attached to a rope, "la maroma," were tossed around by the waves while a sailor watched them from a boat.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Come on! The closest thing to a spa with a lifeguard in the 19th century.\u00a0<\/p>\n
This custom was made fashionable by Isabel II, who came to Santander to take therapeutic baths, and as a true influencer of her time, she persuaded other kings, nobles, marquises, and 19th-century modernists to come to the city. And so, amidst baths, afternoon tea, and horse-drawn carriages, the "aristocratic summer holiday" was invented.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Over time, wave bathing went from being medicinal to summer posing, and Santander became the capital of glamorous summer vacations: palaces, casinos, picture-postcard hotels, and swimsuits.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Today, every July, the city relives that golden age with parades, concerts, workshops, and swimmers dressed in the latest swimsuits.\u00a0<\/p>\n
