History began to take shape more than 240 million years ago, in the Mesozoic era. Furthermore, it not only holds natural wonders, it is also a witness to a deep mining history, which is part of the heritage of Cantabria.
At the beginning of the 20th century, during the opening of a mining gallery called La Isidra, the cave was accidentally discovered. Since then, parts of the cave have been used as ventilation, transportation, and communication routes between the different galleries.
Finally, on July 1, 2005, and after major renovation work, the Government of Cantabria opened the cave to the public. Today, it is accessed by a authentic mining train, which already makes the beginning of the visit an unforgettable experience. The tour begins in an old mine gallery, allowing you to immerse yourself in the history, geology, and mystery of this unique place.
The scientific value of The Blow has been recognized nationally and internationally. For which he has been proposed as Site of Geological Interest of International Relevance (Global Geosite) by the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain, under the name UR004: Zn-Pb deposit of La Florida and Soplao Cave. This proposal is distributed in the geological context of the Urgonian zinc, lead and iron mineralizations, in the basin Basque-Cantabrian.
